Saltbrook on the Bay – Nova Scotia

Please scroll down for our availability calendar, rental rates and booking info

Saltbrook on the Bay is located outside of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada…our only property not located in DownEast Maine.

Saltbrook on the Bay is certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a ‘Backyard Wildlife Habitat’.
We are also certified by the American Vacation Rental Owners Association (AVROA).

Saltbrook on the Bay is a simply rustic, semi-off-the grid, unplugged retreat. It’s a simple, out-in-the-country – very rural, by-the-seaside old cottage, reminiscent of vacations of a different time. It’s perfect for couples or small families who are looking to unwind and relax without distraction of most electronic devices. (There is NO television, NO internet and VERY LIMITED cell reception at the cottage – although free internet is available in nearby town – about 20 minutes away.)

The Property

Think back to when life was simple. Feet were bare, summer breezes blew through screens of open windows, the air was filled with the songs of birds by day and crickets by night. Return to the simplicity you remember and emerge from your summer holiday tranquil and rejuvenated.

We have worked very hard to keep our little cottage pristine from gadgets and whirs and beeps and hums and take you back to nature where you wake to the sound of the ocean waves and light of the morning sun.
You can find shimmering beach glass waiting to be discovered, resident seals, pheasants and fox.

While you are here, make sure you visit the fish market down the road in Parker’s Cove for world-famous scallops or lobster (they will cook them for you). And be sure to visit Annapolis Royal farmer’s market to sample some of the abundant organic produce and local bread and wines.
There are many, many different day trips to make from the cottage home-base.

The rocky beach is accessed by a grassy path through a meadow. Swimming and water activity are not recommended at our beach. Walking, dreaming and stargazing are recommended.

The Cottage

Saltbrook on the Bay is a total of about 800 square feet. It is a vintage, seasonal, traditional summer cottage – somewhere between a ‘camp’ and a ‘cottage’. The first floor has a living room and dining room that seats 4. There is also a front ‘sun-room’ that holds books and games as well as a game table.

The cottage kitchen is equipped with a full size fridge and electric range. There is a stove-top percolator coffee pot, a teapot, toaster and all cooking utensils, dishes and glassware for 4.

The bathroom is on the first floor and has a tub/shower, hairdryer and washing machine (a clothesline is outside for the freshest of laundry).

Upstairs there are two bedrooms —
The back bedroom has a queen bed with an ocean view..

The front bedroom has two twin beds.

The History of Saltbrook on the Bay

So… Maria (one of the owners) was procrastinating at work one day (the office had just started getting internet back around 2003) and she landed upon a Nova Scotia real estate website. She was curious about real estate in the area (she had vacationed in Annapolis Royal on a family vacation when she was a teenager) so she called the real estate agent.

Long story short, by the time she had hung up the phone, she had made an offer – sight unseen — on a tiny cottage on the shore of the Bay of Fundy. Immediately, she packed up her young daughter and headed up to see what she had purchased (well, after telling her husband….”Honey… I kind of bought a house today”).

The cottage was falling apart, with about six different patterns of competing wallpaper, pink shag carpet, and a bathroom with a crumbling foundation (chunks of the ceiling would fall on your head while showering). But the setting was just spectacular. Saltbrook has been a labor of love for the past 15 years or so. Little by little, each room has been redone (and some redone again). The foundation is new, the wallpaper is stripped (although a piece salvaged from one room has been framed), the pink shag carpet removed to reveal hardwood flooring.

It has truly become the family’s “Happy Place”.

Our weeks run from Saturday to Saturday and we only make very few weeks available for rental during the summer and fall season. We have a minimum stay of one week as we’ve found that it takes several days to truly unwind and separate oneself from technology that is normally used everyday.

Rates are subject to change until property is confirmed.

Rates don’t include cleaning fee.

Changeover day is on SATURDAY.

SALTBROOK ON THE BAY IS NOT PET FRIENDLY.  NO PETS OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED ON PREMISES. NO EXCEPTIONS.

RATES ARE QUOTED IN CANADIAN $

Perfect little Cabin

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental

Saltbrook on the Bay

“A perfect little cabin on the Bay of Fundy, reminiscent of childhood vacation cabins. There are a ton of games and books to keep you busy, and there is a hard line phone installed as there isnt cell service out there. We had everything we needed…the kitchen is set up nicely and there is plenty of room for cooking. Even has an ice cream maker! We cooked steaks out back over the fire pit, and had dinner while watching the sun sink into the bay. The tide goes way out, and then when it returns there is a strong wine that comes with it. We travelled the western part of the island and then across to visit a vineyard. Great views on the interior as well as along the coast. Its a cute place, totally relaxing with comforable beds and furniture, and the interior finishes and decor is charming. Maria is a great host – provided lots of information for us about how best to get there and where to shop. The closest little town has cute galleries and restauranst so you wont feel too isolated!”

Nice little getaway only a few minutes from town. Nicely decorated in a seaside theme, comfy Beds and fresh ocean air. A great place to relax and read.

Peaceful, disconnected, charming homebase for a week of adventures

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental
Saltbrook on the Bay

The cottage fulfilled our expectations right from the start – it’s in a slightly remote area, neighbors are nearby but not abutting the cottage, the property is very well-maintained, the views of the bay were just what we anticipated (as was the very rocky shoreline), and the cottage itself is homey, comfortable, well-appointed, clean, and just right for a small group of people (we were two). We cooked some wonderful meals in the kitchen, slept peacefully during the quiet nights, enjoyed the view of the bay and a little bit of tidepooling, and headed out on a LOT of trips all over the bay side and even into the interior and once to the eastern shore. This is a great spot to feel a little away from the world but be a reasonable drive away from great seafood, charming towns, whale watches, good hikes, kayak tours, and all kinds of other opportunities. We appreciated how well prepared we were from all the information & instructions shared by the property owner – there were no surprises whatsoever. It was a perfect experience for us and a dream of a vacation!

Chill Time on the Bay of Fundy

Saltbrook on the Bay

This cottage turned out to be ideal for what I had in mind…a simple, comfortable, quiet space where I could be by the water, do a lot of reading, and with quick access to a seafood store to stock up on fresh lobster! I was blessed with great weather, and enjoyed getting out and about to explore the immediate area and beyond. I recommend the cottage to anyone who really wants to get away from the hustle and bustle to recharge batteries and slow down.

Peaceful, Rustic and Perfect!

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental

Saltbrook on the Bay

My wife (who awesomely found and secured the rental) and I and 2 of our children (teenagers) drove to Nova Scotia from our home in Wisconsin, seeing many things on a busy trip out, while also looking forward to the expected peacefulness of Saltbrook. We weren’t disappointed! Saltbrook and it’s beach were exactly what was represented by the owners. In fact, in my mind, the owners went above and beyond, as there were wildfires in the region of the cottage, which Maria notified my wife of shortly before we left, She even kept us updated while we were on the road, in case of closures or a need to possibly make an alternate arrangement. Thankfully, there were no issues.
We relaxed at the house for 3 of the days of our stay, reading and relaxing at the edge of the “beach” and watching a few seals and eagles, and the amazing tide – flowing by hundreds of feet higher and lower on the beach as it went in and out of the Bay of Fundy. It must be seen to be fully appreciated. The lantern lit graveyard tour at Ft Anne is not to be missed, and we were lucky enough to experience a whale watching excursion from Westport – beyond Digby – on what we were told was one of the best excursions of their season, with humpback whales next to the boat! Annapolis Royal was fun to explore, and our son discovered the wonders of the Canadian “delicacy” of poutin” during our stay. A most excellent time was had by all!

What an Awesome Experience!

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental

SALTBROOK ON THE BAY

What an awesome experience!  Since booking this property the owners have been great and helpful.  The house is beautiful exactly where we wanted to spend our honeymoon.  While here we soaked in the sea, history and food in the valley even visiting Annapolis Royal 4 times over our stay.  One day we went all the way to Westport – what a drive!  And Sandy Cove beach was fantastic for shells and big sea glass.  We spent much time on the beach and by the fire pit just relaxing.

Just Perfect

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental

SALTBROOK ON THE BAY

Thank you so much for the use of your lovely house – just perfect!  Love all the sea-side knick knacks – especially the birds on the stairs.  Enjoyed watching the fabulous sunsets most nights and toasting marshmallows on the fire.  Walked the trail at Delaps Cove – saw some harbor porpoises.  Great views from Fort Anne and lovely dinner at Bistro East in Annapolis Royal – went to Kejimkujik National Park – lovely walks and canoe trip.  Enjoyed Sandy Cove Beach and dinner in the WheelHouse.  Enjoyed the Historic Gardens in Annapolis Royal and cake in the German Bakehaus – highly recommend.  Boys enjoyed the log flume at Clements Park and the go-Karts.

_highlights so far was the whale watch trip with Ocean Explorations at Tiverton especially since it was so foggy and we thought it would be cancelled.  Turns out Tom lives in the house next door!  Saw about a dozen humpbacks – so close up and a minke, puffins, seals, etc.  Brilliant.  Takes about 1 1/2 hours to get there from here.  Also went to Balancing Rock and did the Fundy Trail.

Spectacular Week

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental

SALTBROOK ON THE BAY

We had an amazing time this week!  The tide here is actually so beautiful to watch come in.  It’s amazing to actually walk on the ocean floor and find beach glass in the rocks.  I recommend taking a trip into Digby to go whale watching  The wheelhouse restaurant in Digby has some of the best food in the area.  Their lobster chowder is phenomenal.  Dress warmly for whale watching tours, as it’s cold and windy on the open ocean regardless of how warm it is on land.  We were on the Mariner Cruises and the whales came right up to the boat to look at us  This week has been spectacular and we’ll never forget it!

Lovely and Relaxing Stay

Nova Scotia Vacation Rental

SALTBROOK ON THE BAY

We had a lovely and very relaxing stay.  Our top five:

1)Whale watching (Petite Passage) on Digby Neck

2)Burncoat Head Park at low tide

3)Halifax waterfront – tall ships

4)Peggy’s Cove and Lunnenburg (but quite crowded)

5)Spend time here at the cottage, exploring the each, playing games, picking blackberries, going to Annapolis Royal.
